Reclaimed, these are very durable, originally Creosoted and made from ‘seasoned’ Oak. They have quite a ‘Rustic’ appearance and are very good for duties where strength & longevity is required, for example retaining walls and bridges. We always try to stock the highest grades which are generally straight with good surfaces.
Unlike new Oak sleepers, they are very stable and are very unlikely to deform or split further. Oak sleepers offer exceptionally good value for money and are heavier and stronger than softwood types, thus helping to ensure a stable, durable and strong structure when in place.

Tropical Hardwood Reclaimed Railway Sleepers are Untreated and make good rustic edging, garden features and retaining walls where an attractive ‘seasoned’ look is required. They are extremely hard, durable, strong and suitable for load bearing applications. They are particularly good for retaining walls, where between RSJ's they produce a strong cost effective result.
They do not need treating and have attractive colour and surface texture. Existing for many years due to their durability they are a mixture of species including Jarrah, Ekki, Karri, Angelim Vermelho, Cupiuba, Piquia & Angelim Pedra.
Although accurately machined and an attractive golden brown when first produced they eventually turn a light grey unless treated. Some may be liable to moving a bit being a natural unseasoned product. We normally stock Romanian Oak which is one of the most stable.
Unlike reclaimed Oak types new Oak sleepers some times may tend to move a little after installation. This is partly because they are usually made from ‘Green Oak’ which may not be fully seasoned. They are more durable than new Tanalised Sleepers if properly treated prior to placement.
We categorically recommend new oak should always be treated in some sort of way and a non-permeable ground sheet is recommended between the sleeper and soil.
